Bryant Elementary School has been presented a grant of $2,900 from the Arkansas Game and Fish Schoolyard Habitat Program, it was announced on April 29.
The Arkansas Game and Fish awards grants based on wildlife habitat, student participation and use of native species. The program is funded by the state’s conservation license plate sales.
Pat Knighton, Project Wild Coordinator, made the presentations.
“The most important element of the program is student participation,” Knighton said. “Students plan, develop and maintain the project, which educates them on wildlife and the outdoors.”
Heather Pittmam, fifth grade science teacher and project coordinator for Bryant Elementary, said, “This grant will be used to create an outdoor lab to support all phases of the butterfly life cycle. The goal is to have an area for students to study habitats, food webs and chains. We will have rain barrels and we hope to create a compost area for placing food scraps from the cafeteria.”
The school has involved parents, students and staff in the project.
