RUSSELLVILLE — The Bryant Hornets faced their toughest competition of the season Friday at the[more] Cyclone Invitational in Russellville, earning a 13th place finish with a total of 21.5 points. Conway won the team title with 103.5.
The 400 meter relay team of Derrick Dogan, Charles Henson, Travis Royal, and Caleb Thomas ran their fastest time of the season (43.94) to earn a fourth place finish. Dillion Winfrey made his return from a leg injury to earn a seventh place finish in both the 100 meter dash (11.44) and the 200 meter dash (23.24). Caleb Thomas placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.23.
Dogan earned a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a season and personal best time of 51.58, and then placed in a tie for sixth in the long jump (20' 8").
Spencer Sullivan placed seventh in the 110 meter hurdles in a personal record time of 16.50, then placed eighth in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 42.29.
The 1600-meter relay team of Lester Lowery, Lance Smith, Royal, and Dogan placed eighth in a time of 3:35.11.
"We had a good meet, despite what the point total might say,” said Hornets coach Steve Oury. “It was nice to see Dillion Winfrey back out there. He lost some conditioning, but he did a great job. The level of competition was high, and we responded by setting numerous personal and seasonal bests, so when that happens I've got to be pleased.
“Besides the guys who scored, we had great races run by Tyler Purtle in the 800, Clifton Hampton and Spencer Adami in the 3200, and Lester Lowery in the 400,” he added. “Also, Travis Royal set a new personal record in the high jump."
The Hornets will send some athletes to a practice meet in Benton on Tuesday, then send the full team to Conway on Thursday before finishing the week at Lake Hamilton Friday, sending a partial team to compete.
