The Bethel Middle School Lady Hornets got the 2013-14 basketball season off to a good start Monday night. Bryant Blue downed the EStem Lady Mets of Little Rock, 29-25, in the eighth grade game after the seventh grade team forged a 19-12 victory.
Both Bethel teams will be participating in the Tip Off Night event this evening at Bryant Middle School gym. The eighth grade team has a B game against Bryant White on Thursday then is set to play an A game at Benton on Monday, Nov. 25. The seventh grade team will also have a B game against Bryant White on Thursday before starting play in the Anthony School Tournament in Little Rock on Monday, Nov. 18, against Little Rock Episcopal Collegiate at 5:30 p.m.
Raija Todd scored 13 points to lead the Lady Hornets eighth grade team to victory. Danielle Singleton, Raelae Benton and Stephanie Cullen added 4 each while Claire Ausbrooks and Baylee Rowton scored 2 each.
The Lady Hornets broke out quickly, building a 9-1 lead in the first quarter. It was 11-8 at the half and 23-15 going into the fourth quarter.
In the seventh grade game, Mary Catherine Selig scored 15 of Bethel’s 19 points. Ashlyn Thompson and Grace Ovellette had 2 each.
A 9-0 third quarter outburst broke open a close contest. Bethel led 3-2 after the first quarter and 6-4 at the half. EStem whittled into the 15-4 lead down the stretch but was unable to catch up.
