The Bryant Hornets freshman team will be playing for a Central Arkansas Junior High Conference championship tonight and the rival Benton Panthers freshman team will be trying to spoil their bid when the teams meet at Hornets Stadium.
It’ll be the 33rd gridiron meeting between the two schools since Benton merged its two junior high schools in 1986. The Panthers hold an 18-13-1 overall advantage in the series but Bryant has won nine of the last 10 meetings including last year, 35-0.
The Hornets come into the game 7-1 in conference play, 8-1 overall, tied atop the league with Conway Blue. By virtue of a 21-14 win over the Wampus Cats, Bryant has the tiebreaker for the conference title. Conway Blue is battling Conway White (4-4) tonight as well. Bryant is coming off a 22-0 win over White on the road last Thursday.
Benton is also 4-4 in the conference after a 29-20 win over Cabot Red, the same Cabot Red team that handed Bryant its lone defeat of the season, 14-7, the previous week.
Prior to the freshman team, the Benton eighth grade team will take on the Bryant White Hornets of Bryant Middle School. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m., with the freshman game starting around 7:30.
