As the Henderson State University Red Wave makes final preparations for the 2014 NSISC Championship swim meet, Bryant native Kyle Douglas, one of the captains of the squad, will be helping lead the charge for the team.
As a freshman, Douglas was a walk-on redshirt, however over the years, his hard work and leadership skills have impressed head coach Coak Matthews enough to name him as one of the three team captains.
“Kyle is a wonderful young man who has done a fantastic job for us over the past few years,” Matthews said. “When he initially approached me to join the team, I really didn’t think that he would last very long. If someone had told me four years ago that Kyle would be as successful both in the water and the classroom as he has proven to be and that I would choose him as a captain in his senior year, I would have said they were crazy.
“But looking back now, I am so proud of what this young man has accomplished and so pleased that he walked into my office four years ago and asked for a chance to prove himself,” the coach continued. “I thank God that I have had the opportunity to coach him and to know him personally. I have every expectation that Kyle will not only have a very positive effect on what our team will be able to achieve next week, but that he will also become a very positive contributor to our society upon leaving Henderson State University with his degree.”
Douglas is a 2010 graduate of Bryant High School. The Red Wave’s league championship meet is set for this Wednesday through Saturday at Cleveland, Miss.
