Bryant 6’s finish as runners-up at Lonoke tourney

The Bryant 6-year-old All-Stars won five games at the Lonoke Father’s Day Tournament but they couldn’t get past the Sylvan Hills All-Stars in the championship game on Sunday, June 15.

A six-run third lifted Sylvan Hills to an 8-4 win to capture the title. To start the tournament, Bryant was edged by Sylvan Hills 7-5. But they came back to club Brinkley 14-0; Beebe 18-3; another Sylvan Hills team, 16-0; Benton 11-8; and Lonoke, 15-2, before the rematch.

The Bryant 6-year-old team, coached by Brad Fischer, Chris Taylor and Josh Daves, includes Jonathan Carter, Cohen Chalmers, Grant Daves, Kolby Duncan, Julian Epperson, Brodie Fischer, Colt Martin, Jeremiah Motes, Elem Shelby, Jordan Shipe, Jake Taylor and Chase Trimble.

Sylvan Hills 8, Bryant 4

The Bryant Stars took a 4-2 lead in the second inning when Taylor, Duncan, Motes and Daves each scored. But, in the top of third, Sylvan Hills scored the maximum of six runs to grab the lead.

In the fourth, Taylor got on base for Bryant but was tagged out at third on Duncan’s grounder to the pitcher. In the fifth, Trimble, Daves and Carter reached to load the bases but Sylvan Hills got out of the jam to end the game.

Bryant 15, Lonoke 2

Scoring the six-run maximum in each of the first two innings, Bryant eased to victory in the semifinals.

In the first, Shipe, Fischer, Shelby, Martin, Taylor and Duncan each scored. In the second, Epperson, Daves, Carter, Shipe, Shelby and Martin crossed the plate.

Lonoke got its two runs in the second to cut the lead to 12-2 but Bryant put it away in the third when Duncan, Motes and Daves scored.

Bryant 11, Benton 8

Bryant took a 2-0 lead in the first when Shipe and Fischer scored. In the second, Duncan, Daves, Carter, Chalmers, Shipe and Fischer each came home to make it 8-0.

Benton whittled three runs off the margin in the bottom of the inning and, after holding Bryant in the third, trimmed the lead to 8-5 in the home half.

Duncan scored in the fourth for Bryant but Benton continued its rally, cutting it to 9-7 going into the fifth.

Fischer and Shelby each brought in key runs to help stem the tide and Bryant held Benton to one run in the bottom of the fifth to hang on for the victory.

Bryant 16, Sylvan Hills Bears 0

Six runs in each of the first two innings and four more in the third buried Sylvan Hills. In the first, Shipe, Fischer, Shelby, Martin, Taylor and Trimble accounted for the runs.

In the second, Epperson, Daves, Carter, Shipe, Fischer and Shelby made it 12-0.

The final four runs were scored by Taylor, Motes, Trimble and Duncan.

Sylvan Hills managed one base-runner on a hit with one-out in the third.

Bryant 18, Beebe 3

Beebe scored three runs in the top of the first but Bryant trumped that with a max inning in which the first six hitters in the lineup scored, Shipe, Fischer, Shelby, Martin, Taylor and Motes.

In the second, the onslaught continued with Duncan, Epperson, Daves, Carter, Shipe and Fischer crossing the plate.

The third six-run inning saw Shelby, Martin, Taylor, Motes, Trimble and Duncan coming home.

Bryant 14, Brinkley 0

Again the first six batters for Bryant scored in the first and the defense shut down the opposition. Brinkley managed one base-runner on a two-out single in the first.

Shipe, Fischer, Shelby, Martin, Taylor and Motes put up the first six for Bryant. Epperson, Duncan Daves, Chalmers, Shipe, Fischer and Shelby accounted for the six in the second.

Bryant put it out of reach when Taylor and Motes scored in the third.

Sylvan Hills 7, Bryant 5

Sylvan Hills took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and led the whole way, though Bryant rallied.

Motes and Trimble each scored in the second to cut it to 3-2 but Sylvan Hills got both of those runs back in the bottom of the inning then added two more in the third to make it 7-2.

In the top of the fourth, Martin, Taylor and Motes each scored but those were the last to reach base for Bryant.
