Bryant 14’s head to Virginia for Babe Ruth World Series

Though they didn’t win their District Tournament and they didn’t win their State Tournament, the Bryant 14-year-old All-Star baseball team is now on its way to play in the Babe Ruth World Series in Loudoun County, Va., just outside of Washington, D.C., in Purcellville, Va.

That’s because the team, given a chance to play in the Southwest Regional Tournament in Bay City, Texas, swept to the championship to earn the World Series bid.

Bryant opens pool play at the Series on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 8 p.m., against the host team.[more]

The Bryant 14’s include Wesley Akers, Harrison Dale, Justin Emmerling, Zach Graddy, Ashton Green, Tristan Matthews, Austin Miller, Christopher Phillips, Nate Rutherford, Korey Thompson, Chris Troillett, Chase Tucker and Blake Yates. Jason Thompson manages the team with assistance from Mark Akers.

Bryant actually reached the championship round of both District and State tournaments unbeaten. At District, however, the Stars lost twice to White Hall in the title round and thus were denied the tourney title. But they were still able to advance to State. There, likewise, they went unbeaten all the way to the championship round where host Clark County forged two victories to deny them the State crown.

Clark County earned the right to advance to the Regional but couldn’t make the trip. Bryant, as runner-up, was offered the chance to represent the State instead and, after some deliberation, agreed to go.

The Stars then put together their best baseball to get to the championship round unbeaten once again. This time, however, they outlasted McComb, Miss., 12-9, to take the title.

Along with Bryant and Loudoun County, the World Series teams include Arlington, Mass. (New England Regional champion); Wet End, Pa. (Middle Atlantic); South Lexington, Ky. (Ohio Valley); Tallahassee, Fla. (Southeast); Waite Park, Minn. (Midwest Plains); Vancouver, Wash. (Pacific Northwest); Tri Valley, Calif. (Pacific Southwest); and Winchester, Va. (Virginia State champion).

In pool play, Bryant will follow up its game with Loudoun County with a Sunday meeting with Vancouver, Wash., at 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday at 1:30, Bryant will take on Arlington, Mass., before wrapping up pool play against Waite Park, Minn., on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The top three teams from each pool advance to the single elimination championship tournament beginning Thursday, Aug. 26. The top teams from each of the two pools will receive a first-round bye in the tourney. The championship game is set for Saturday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m.

BryantDaily.com will post all the Bryant results as the team’s games conclude.
