AMITE, La. — The Bryant 10-year-old All-Stars dropped into the losers bracket of the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional tournament Sunday with a 6-2 loss to Oak Grove, Miss. They were set to play again on Monday against Madisonville, La., with designs on advancing to the final four and another Monday game at 6:30 p.m.
The Bryant team, managed by Jason Greiner with assistance from Ryan Martin and Jeremy Morrow, includes Carson Burnett, Gavin Burton, Luke Dreher, Caleb Greiner, Drew Hatman, Connor Martin, Colby Morrow, Cade Parker, Jackson Parker, Turner Seelinger, Hayden Thompson and Logan White.
Bryant had a 2-1 lead in the six-inning game, going into the bottom of fifth when Oak Grove erupted for five runs. In the top of the sixth, Cade Parker led off with a double but the next three were retired as Oak Grove held on for the win.
Both teams scored a run in the second. For Bryant, Burnett reached on an error and White was hit by a pitch. Cade Parker rolled out to second as the runners moved up and, with two down, Martin was plunked by a 3-2 pitch. Thompson was struck by a 1-1 delivery and it forced in a run.
Oak Grove strung together three hits in the bottom of the second to plate the tying tally.
It stayed that way until the top of the fifth when Martin doubled and scored on a single by Seelinger.
The bottom of the fifth started innocently enough. The lead-off batter was hit by a pitch but then Seelinger struck out the next batter and recorded the second out on a comebacker to the mound. Within a strike of ending the inning, a walk was issued. Three singles and an error followed as Oak Grove built the 6-2 lead.
