Three organizations on the Bryant High School campus have joined forces to make Thanksgiving a better holiday for some families in the area.
The Air Force Junior ROTC, Junior CIVITAN and the Honor Society have had programs similar to this in the past but, according to Lieutenant Colonel Ricky Willis, Senior Aerospace Instructor of the AFJROTC, until now they have always worked separately. This year they decided it was time for a change.
“This is the first time they have worked together,” said Willis. “It should maximize our efforts.”[more]
He said all three groups have shared in the different tasks involved in the project. They have made posters and collected boxes and will count cans, separate them into groups and organize the different cans into food baskets.
All schools in the district will work to collect canned and non-perishable items. Money will also be collected to purchase turkeys or hams. Salem, Springhill and Collegeville Elementary schools will work with the high school. Other schools will collect food for families within their own schools.
The school’s social workers will identify families in need. The Thanksgiving meals will be distributed to the chosen families, and any extra food will be put in the school food pantry.
“Our goal is to help 50 needy families within the school district,” said Willis.
Anyone who wants to help with donations of canned food, non-perishable food or money should check items in at the BHS office in Building 17. Donations will be collected through Thursday, Nov. 19.
