The third-grade GT class of Tiffany Cookus at Bryant Elementary School dressed up as superheroes to help promote a canned food drive dubbed "Heroes for the Hungry" which they are participating in, in advance of the holidays.
Students at Bryant High School, Collegeville Elementary and Salem Elementary[more] are also participating in the drive, Cookus said.
The students who have been dressing up stand out in front of the school before classes start to encourage kids and their parents to bring canned food.
“We’ve teamed up with the Bryant High School ROTC program to do Heroes for the Hungry to help raise food to donate to the Salvation Army for their food pantry,” Cookus explained. “We’ve had guest speakers come out from the Salvation Army and they spoke to the kids about the need for food. So the third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade GT classes at Bryant Elementary are sponsoring the canned food drive.”
As of Thursday, Nov. 11, 1,472 cans had been collected at BES.
“And our goal was 1,200 cans,” Cookus noted.
The drive will continue through Wednesday, Nov. 17. Those wishing to contribute can drop off food at any of the participating schools.
