The Bryant Athletic Association will celebrate the opening of the 2011 youth baseball season[more] — the first at Bishop Park — with ceremonies and activities on Saturday, April 9.
Festivities will be highlighted by the signing of an agreement to host a Regional tournament for 6-year-olds and the dedication of the street leading into the park in honor of the late Ken Palmquist. A long-time employee of the Bryant Parks and Recreation Department, Palmquist worked on the fields for the BAA at Ashley Park through the years and during the development of the fields at Bishop. He passed away on March 2. Members of his family will throw out the ceremonial first pitches.
After team photos are taken from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the concession stand will open at 3 p.m., serving free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks. Bounce houses will also be opened.
At 4:30, the annual introduction of teams and players will commence followed by the presentation of the pre-season tournament trophies.
The colors will be presented with the National Anthem sung by Carroll Posey and, after an opening prayer by Doug Pruitt of Mid-Towne Church, local dignitaries and elected officials will be recognized.
Regular-season league games will begin on Monday, April 11.
