ALMA — In another 7A/6A-Central Conference match that included another long school-night trip and that could’ve gone either way, the Bryant Lady Hornets battled the Alma Lady Airedales through four games before absorbing a tough 3-1 loss, 21-25, 25-27, 30-28, 21-25.
The Thursday match made Bryant 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the league. Three of those conference losses, however, were narrow defeats and came on long road trips. In the second half of the season, those teams — Alma, Greenwood and Van Buren — will be coming to Bryant.
The Lady Hornets play in the Lady Cyclone Tournament in Russellville starting with pool play at 9 a.m. this Saturday. They travel to Conway in their next conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
“We played hard but just could not get the win,” said Bryant coach Lawrence Jefferson of the loss to Alma. “We had a chance to win the second set but they pushed just a little harder. Alma is a well-coached team and a tough place to play.
“If we can eliminate some of our simple mistakes, we will win some of these close matches,” he related. “The girls continue to work hard every day. They never quit.”
Allie Anderson came through with 22 kills in the match. Kendall Selig had eight, Mercedes Dillard four and Britney Sahlmann 3.
Sahlmann had 37 assists and was good on 31 of 32 serves. She also contributed three blocks. Selig was 15 of 16 at the service line with three aces. Abby Staton had two aces and Dillard one. Whitney Brown was good on all 15 of her serves while Nikki Clay got in nine of 10.
Clay led the team with 23 digs. Brown had 22 and Anderson 15. Staton added 10.
In a junior varsity match, Alma prevailed 25-11, 25-14.
