AA Sox frustrated by rain, Pangburn

By Rob Patrick

The Bryant Sport Shop Black Sox AA American Legion team wrapped up play in the Ryan[more] White Memorial Wood Bat Tournament at Bryant High School field, by absorbing a frustrating, rain-shortened 2-0 loss to the Pangburn AA team on Sunday.

The Sox had baserunners in each of the five innings but couldn’t get the clutch hit they needed to break through. Still, they stayed close thanks to some clutch defense and the pitching of Hunter Oglesby and Tre Davis.

Oglesby, who worked the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits, worked around an error in the first. In the second, shortstop C.J. Phillips made a sparkling play for the first out then Pangburn’s Chase Hopkins singled through the hole into left. Hunter Poe worked a walk then Alec Bourgeois, on an 0-2 pitch, slapped an RBI single to right.

Oglesby forced Pangburn to strand two, however, ended the inning with a pop to Weston Jones at third and striking out Colby Crossen.

The right-hander pitched around another walk and another error in the third and, in the fourth, surrendered a single to Poe. But Jones caught a liner of Bourgeois’ bat and doubled Poe off of first.

In the meantime, the Sox were battling Pangburn lefty Skylar Litaker who issued six walks in five innings while also striking out 10. Three of the walks came in the first to no avail. In the second, Phillips beat out an infield hit to deep short. Zach Graddy sacrificed him to second then a wild pitch allowed him to get to third where he was stranded.

Daniel Darbonne walked with one out in the third and, in the fourth, Graddy drew a free pass. He got to second on a passed ball before the final out was recorded.

Pangburn picked up another run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Davis grazed Josh Roach with an 0-2 delivery. With Sydney Owens at the plate, Roach was on the move, trying to steal. A wild pitch on the play allowed him to make it all the way to third. Owens walked and stole second but when Litaker hit a liner to Caleb Chaffin at first, he whirled and fired to Phillips covering second to double off Owens.

In Bryant’s fifth, Justin Emmerling drew a one-out walk and stole his way to third but he too was stranded.

With the rain intensifying, Pangburn loaded the bases with two out in the top of the sixth before time was called. After a delay of over 30 minutes, it was eventually determined that the field was unplayable and the game was called.

With the win, Pangburn advanced to bracket play at Lakeside today as winners of the Black pool.

The Sox are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at North Little Rock.
