LONG BEACH, Miss. — The Bryant 7-year-old All-Stars moved a win away from playing for the[more] Southwest Regional Tournament championship on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Orange Grove, Miss.
The Bryant 7-year-old team, managed by Jeremy Stovall, is Garrison Blacklaw, Brady Brower, Reid Catton, Clay Crawford, Gage Horn, Dillon Hunt, Grant Johnson, Carson Kemp, Gideon Motes, Carson Nagle, Hank Penfield, and Caden Stovall.
The team was set to play on Monday at 3 p.m.
Against Orange Grove, Bryant put together a four-run first to gain the upper hand. Orange Grove cut the lead in half in the top of the second but, in the bottom of the third, Bryant got those two back. A run for Orange Grove in the top of the fourth proved to be too little, too late.
Catton, Hunt and Horn each had two hits for Bryant. Hunt and Horn drove in two runs each.
The opening salvo came after Orange Grove could only muster a two-out single in the top of the first. Catton then opened the bottom of the inning with a double. He stole third and scored on Kemp’s groundout.
Johnson singled and stole his way to third. He scored from there when Hunt singled to center. A base hit by Nagle set the stage for Horn’s two-run double to cap off the inning.
Orange Grove put together three singles to get on the board in the top of the second. The second run came in on a groundout.
It stayed 4-2 until the bottom of the third. Catton tripled and scored on a single by Blacklaw. With two out, Horn ripped a double to make it 6-2.
A pair of singles and an error produced a run for Orange Grove in the top of the fourth then the time limit ran out as Bryant was batting in the bottom of the inning.
