OCALA, Fla. — The Bryant 10-year-old All-Stars suffered a rough start to pool play at the 2013 Cal Ripken World Series. Already up 3-1 after one inning, the Bear, Del., All-Stars piled up six runs in the second on the way to a 14-2 win on Saturday.
Bryant is set to continue pool play on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., against the host team. On Monday, the Stars take on Meridian, Idaho, at 7 p.m., then take on Bismarck, N.D., on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Bryant’s 10-year-old team, coached by Greg Riggs, includes Aiden Adams, Kannon Allison, Tyler Bates, Clay Curtis, River Gregory, Will Hathcote, Cameron McDonald, Trey Miller, Justin Orender, Ryan Riggs, Austin Schroeder, Blaine Sears, Brandon Thomisee and Josh Turner.
The Delaware team opned up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as the Bryant team shook off its nervousness. In the bottom of the inning, Schroeder led off the with a double but, as it turned out, that was the only Bryant hit of the game. Schroeder advanced to third on McDonald’s groundout then scored on Orender’s bouncer to short.
A pair of singles, a walk and a one-out triple opened the floodgates for Bear in the top of the second and before Bryant could get that third out, it was 9-1.
Delaware added two in the third and three in the fourth. In between, Bryant managed a second run in the home third when Adams was struck by a 1-0 delivery, took second on a passed ball, third on an error by the shortstop then scored on Schroeder’s sacrifice fly.
Trailing 14-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Bryant managed to get a runner on base when Miller’s pop was misplayed but he was forced at second on a grounder to short by Gregory moments before the game ended with a strikeout.
